Being affiliated with a well-known law firm is often an important first step on the way to a successful career.

ascertain

(v.) to find out
Detectives may use a magnifying glass when searching clues that can ascertain what may have happened.

attainment

(n.) an accomplishment, the act of achieving
You may feel a sense of attainment when climbing to the summit of a mountain!

bequeath

(v.) to give or pass on as an inheritance
Few people will make enough money in their lifetimes to be in a position to bequeath a fortune to their heirs.

cogent

(adj.) forceful, convincing; relevant, to the point
A group of legal scholars held a press conference to present a cogent plea for reform of the state's prison system.

converge

(v.) to move toward one point, approach nearer together
In the painting with the railroad tracks, the rails seemed to converge and meet at the distant city in the back.

disperse

(v.) to scatter, spread far and wide
The particles of matter were dispersed into outer space, like fireworks sparks flying out from the centre.

esteem

(v.) to regard highly (n.) a highly favorable opinion or judgment
Many young people are told to esteem and honor their ancestors.
People like the president or a major magnate are held in high esteem.

expunge

(v.) to erase, obliterate, destroy
It is impossible to expunge all files you have downloaded onto your computer, because it is saved in the computer's hard drive.

finite

(adj.) having limits; lasting for a limited time
It is impossible to imagine that the stars in the sky at night could be finite.

invulnerable

(adj.) not able to be wounded or hurt; shielded against attack
Many supernatural humans or maybe even terrestrial beings in science fictional movies are likely invulnerable to many conditions.

malevolent

(adj.) spiteful, showing ill will
Maleficent is the evil mistress in Sleeping Beauty, a Disney villain with malevolent feelings.

nonchalant

(adj.) cool and confident, unconcerned
Some people who already understand the subject may feel nonchalant when listening to the lesson.

omniscient

(adj.) knowing everything; having unlimited awareness or understanding
Although the world seems to have acquired much knowledge we are not omniscient.

panacea

(n.) a remedy for all ills; cure-all; an answer to all problems
If there was a panacea for cancer, global warming, drought, and many of the other problems of the world, we would be at rest.

scrupulous

(adj.) exact, careful, attending thoroughly to details; having high moral standards, principled
Many people are scrupulous in their cleaning, where every scrap of dirtiness must be removed.

skulk

(v.) to move about stealthily; to lie in hiding
It is frightful to think that an animal could be skulking around your house about to pounce!

supercilious

(adj.) proud and contemptuous; showing scorn because of a feeling of superiority
Some spoiled and rich children may be too supercilious to understand what hard work and effort is to others.

uncanny

(adj.) strange, mysterious, weird, beyond explanation
In many shows and movies, the main character often has an uncanny ability to solve problems or do something special.

venial

(adj.) easily excused; pardonable
A venial mistake may not hurt to much and can be excused at first, but many can cause trouble.
