Adhesion
The ability of a material to adhere or stick to a dissimilar material
Alloy
A mixture of metals
Amalgam
A soft metal made of alloy mixed with mercury to restore form and function to the teeth
BIS-GMA
Also known as Resin Matrix and stands for bisphenol-A-glycidyl dimethacrylate; the binding substance holding the filler particles together, the foundation of the composite.
Bonding
Verb: Adhering tooth-colored resin composite to a tooth surface to create a bond.
Noun: Process by which tooth-colored resin composite is bonded, sculpted, hardened, and polished to tooth surfaces, usually for aesthetic purpose
Ceramics
An extremely hard, heat- and corrosive-resistant material that is clay fired at a very high temperature; Dental ceramics are compounds of metallic and non-metallic elements.
Chemical Retention
Occurs when two materials have a chemical reaction to create retention
Composite Resin
Tooth-colored filling material made of silica or porcelain particles interlaced with liquid resin
Compressive Stress
Squeezing of a material without crushing
Cured
The completion of curing dental material during a restoration procedure
Curing
Chemical or physical process that improves the properties of a dental material, such as hardness and strength
Curing light
A small dental Equipment that is used to cure, harden, or set light-cured dental materials
Direct Restoration
The materials by which cavities are restored in the mouth with pliable, workable, adaptable materials
Filter
Silica or porcelain particles that add strength to composite resins
Flow
The ability of a material to be pliable enough to be molded and manipulated into the tooth preparation
Galvanic
Relating to an electric shock due to two different metals coming in contact
Glass Ionomer
Composed of silicate glass powder and a liquid solution of polyacrylic acid; the two primary advantages of this material is it bonds to enamel and dentin and releases fluoride into the tooth structure
Indirect Restoration
restorations created in the office by a laboratory technician or they can come from an outside dental lab source
Inlay
A gold, porcelain, or resin filling made to fit a prepared cavity cemented or bonded in place to restore a decayed or broken tooth
IRM
stands for Intermediate Restorative Material; one of the best soothing materials used in temporary situations and is composed of zinc oxide-eugenol
Macro-filler
contain the largest of the fillers; these are the traditional restorative composites of the posterior teeth providing the greatest strength and wear resistance but have poor polishing ability, leaving a duller, coarser surface
Malleability
The property of being shaped or formed under pressure without breaking
Matrix
The binding substance that holds filler particles together, especially in a composite resin
Mechanical Properties
the properties of a material that reveal the elastic and inelastic reaction when a force is applied
Micro-leakage
A small leak between restorations and the natural tooth structure
Onlay
A gold, porcelain or resin filling that also covers one or more cusps of a tooth; used to restore a decayed or broken tooth
Palladium
A soft, silver-white, tarnish-resistant, naturally occurring metal related to platinum; considered a precious metal
Platinum
A silver-white precious metal that does not corrode
Retention
The ability to keep a restoration form displacement or to hold two objects firmly together
Shear Stress
Parallel forces created by sliding in opposite directions
smear layer
A very thin layer of debris on newly prepared dentin
Solubility
the measure of how much a material will dissolve in a liquid
Tensile Stress
Pulling and stretching of a material
Thermal Properties
property of dental materials caused by expansion and contraction when exposed to heat and cold
Triturate
The mixing of alloy with mercury to form amalgam
Viscosity
The resistance of a material to flow
Zirconium oxide
A newly developed ceramic material that allows the dentists to place an all-ceramic crowns in the posterior that will withstand chewing forces
