amastia

A condition where there is a lack of breast tissue despite the presence of an areola and nipple. (a/mast/ia)

polymastia

A condition in which an individual has more than 2 elevated area on the chest or abdomen with areola and nipple. (poly/mast/ia)

breast cancer

A malignant tumor arising from breast tissue.

infiltration ductal carcinoma (IDC)

The most common form of breast cancer in which a tumor grows within a lactiferous gland.

carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the cervix

A form of cervical cancer that arises from the cells of the cervix, which change in appearance before developing into a spreading malignancy.
Exposure to HPV may increase the risk of developing CIS.

cervical cancer

A malignant tumor of the cervix.

cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)

Most common form of cervical cancer; arises from the epithelial cells lining the opening into the uterus.
HPV is the primary cause of CIN

cervicitis

Inflammation of the cervix. (cervic/itis)

endocervicitis

The most common form of cervicitis where the inner lining of the cervix becomes inflamed. (endo/cervic/itis)

cystocele

A protrusion of the urinary bladder against the wall of the vagina. (cyst/o/cele)

rectocele

A protrusion of the rectum against the wall of the vagina. (rect/o/cele)

endometrial cancer

A malignant tumor arising from the endometrial tissue lining the uterus. Most endometrial cancers arise from the glandular cells of the endometrium and are called adenocarcinomas.

The abnormal growth of endometrial tissue throughout areas of the pelvic cavity, including the external walls of the uterus, fallopian tubes, urinary bladder and even the peritoneum. (endo/metr/i/osis)

endometritis

Inflammation of the endometrium; usually caused by bacterial infection. (endo/metr/itis)

fibrocystic breast disease

Occurs when one or more benign, fibrous cysts develop within the breast; an inherited condition with no known association with breast cancer.

An abnormal passage from one organ or cavity to another.

salpingitis

Inflammation of the fallopian tube; usually caused by bacterial infection associated with PID. (salping/itis)

salpingocele

Protrusion or herniation of a fallopian tube wall. (salping/o/cele)

toxic shock syndrome (TSS)

Severe bacterial infection characterized by high fever, skin rash, mental confusion, acute renal failure and abnormal liver function.
Caused by a type of Staphylococcus; most common in women using non-cotton tampons.

vaginitis

Inflammation of the vagina. (vagin/itis) AKA: colpitis

atrophic vaginitis

Symptoms include redness and swelling with thinning of the vaginal wall and loss of moisture, usually due to depletion of estrogen.

vulvitis

Inflammation of the external genitals or vulva. (vulv/itis)

vulvovaginitis

Inflammation of the vulva and vagina. (vulv/o/vagin/itis)

rectovaginal fistula

An abnormal passage that occurs between the vagina and rectum.

vesicovaginal fistula

An abnormal passage located between the urinary bladder and the vagina.

hysteratresia

The closure of the uterus or absence of a normal opening resulting in an abnormal obstruction within the uterine canal that may interfere with childbirth. (hyster/atresia)

leiomyoma

AKA fibroid tumors; benign tumors that arise from the muscular wall of the uterus. (lei/o/my/oma)
Can produce abnormal pain during menstruation.

mastitis

Inflammation of the breast; often caused by bacterial infection of the lactiferous ducts withing the breast tissue. (mast/itis)

mastoptosis

A breast that is abnormally pendulous or drooping. (mast/o/ptosis)

oophoropathy

Any disease of an ovary. (oophor/o/pathy)

oophoritis

Inflammation of an ovary. (oophor/itis)

ovarian cancer

The most lethal form of reproductive cancer in women (aside from breast cancer)

ovarian cyst

A cyst on an ovary that is usually benign and asymptomatic.
May cause pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea.

polycystic ovarian syndrome

A hormonal disturbance characterized by a lack of ovulation (anovulation), amenorrhea, and infertility.
Numerous ovarian cysts may develop, increasing the size of the ovary dramatically.

parovarian cyst

Cyst development that has spread to the fallopian tubes.

pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Inflammation involving some or all of the female organs within the pelvic cavity.
Accompanied by pelvic pain caused by bacterial infection that spread from other organs.

premenstrual syndrome

A collection of symptoms including nervous tension, irritability, mastalgia, edema and headache, which usually occur during the 10 days preceding menstruation.

prolapsed uterus

A condition where the uterus becomes displaced and droops downward into the vagina.
