Ecology

Ecology

Is the scientific study of interactions of organisms with one another and with the physical and chemical environment.

Environment

The physical, biological, and chemical factors that affect an organism.

Ecosystem

A community (all living things) and the physical environment interacting & functioning together.

Species

A group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring.

Habitat

The natural environment in which an organism lives.

Population

All members of a species in a given area.

Community

All populations in a given area that are dependent on one another.

Biome

A type of ecosystem that covers a particular region of Earth.

Biosphere

Includes many ecosystems, portion of the earth in which life exists.

Ecological Organization

Population ? Community ? Ecosystem ? Biosphere

Abiotic

The non-living, physical & chemical factors that affect organisms.

Limiting Factor

Determines the types of organisms that can exist in an environment.

Nutritional Relationships

Involves the transfer of nutrients from one organism to another within the ecosystem.

Autotrophs

Synthesize (make) their own food.

Heterotrophs

Can not synthesize their own food.

Saprophytes

Obtain nutrients from the remains of other organisms.

Herbivores

Feed on plants, Ex: Koala, Deer, "grazers

Carnivores

Consumes other animals.

Omnivores

Eat both plants and animals.

Symbiotic Relationships

A relationship that benefits at least one of the organism involved.
