Lines

Thought groups written on the same line

Stanza

a regular grouping of two or more lines

End Rhyme

words that rhyme at the end of the lines

Internal Rhyme

words that rhyme within a line

Rhythm

the pattern made by the variation of stressed and unstressed words and syllables

Meter

rhythmical pattern determined by the stresses or beats in each line

Alliteration

the repetition of a sound, usually the first sound in a group of words

sets up patterns in poetry

Onomatopoeia

words that imitate the sounds they describe (buzz, splash, and hiss)

Imagery

words chosen to create pictures in your mind that appear to the senses

Figurative Language

writing that it not meant to be taken literally. It includes many types of figures of speech

Figures of speech

the overall term for metaphor, personification, simile, and symbol

Simile

a comparison using as or like (pale as a ghost/her anger was like bees buzzing around a hive)

Metaphor

a comparison that does not use as or like (the spider's web was strung with diamonds)

Personification

giving human qualities to non-human subjects (The train whistle screamed.)

Symbol

anything that stands for or represents something (a dove with an olive branch symbolizes peace)

Japanese poetry with the pattern 5/7/5
