Unit 6: Energy of Reactions

Activation Energy

The amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction

ADP

An organic compound that is composed of adenosine and two phosphate groups

Aerobic

Using oxygen

Anaerobic

Without oxygen

Atom

The smallest unit of an element, made from at least one proton ant one neutron in a nucleus that is surrounded by one of more shells of electrons

ATP

The energy molecule that is used by cells to perform cellular processes

Bond Energy

The measue of bond strenth in a chemical bond

Catalyst

A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself being used up

Chemical Change

Occurs when a substance combines with another to form a new substance

Endothermic

A reactiont that absorbes energy

Exothermic

A reaction that releases energy

Molecule

A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unot of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction

Photosynthesis

The process by which plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize food from carbon dioxide and water

Product

The ending material in a chemical reaction

Reactant

Starting materials of a chemical reaction

Reaction Rate

The speed at which a chemical reaction proceeds

Respiration

A process in living organisms involving the production of ATP, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide
