Ch 6 Skin & Skin's Accessory Structures

pore

any small opening in the skin or outer surface of an animal

hair shaft

the part of the hair that projects up from the skin's surface and is visible above the surface of the skin

hair root

the part of the hair contained within the follicle below the surface of the skin

hair follicle

a tubelike pocket of epidermal cells that extends into the dermis and in which a hair develops; composed of epidermal cells

dermal papillae

fingerlike projections of the dermis into epidermis that create epidermal ridges and account for the unique fingerprints.

sudoriferous glands

glands in the skin that secrete watery secretions, which contain mostly water and small amounts of salts and nitrogenous wastes

eccrine glands

sweat glands that secrete watery secretions for thermoregulation; ducts empty secretions directly into pores and onto outer surface of epidermis

epidermis

outer layer of skin that consists stratified squamous epithelium

dermis

the deep vascular inner layer of the skin that consists of dense fibrous irregular connective tissue

arrector pili

a smooth muscle attached to hair follicles that causes "goose bumps" to appear on the skin when contracted

hypodermis

a layer beneath the skin, which contains adipose tissue and loose areolar connective tissue; binds skin to underlying muscles

sebaceous glands

glands that secrete an oily secretion into the hair follicle that lubricates the hair and skin and discourages the growth of bacteria on the skin

ceruminous glands

Modified apocrine sweat glands of the external ear canal that secrete ear wax

mammary glands

modified apocrine sweat glands that produce milk to feed the young in response to certain hormones after childbirth

apocrine glands

sweat glands that secrete their sticky odorous secretions into hair follicles; they become active at puberty and respond to stress and sexual arousal

eponychium

The thick proximal nail fold that lies over the nail root.

nail bed

portion of the skin on which the nail body rests

hyponychium

thickened stratum corneum of the epidermis that lies underneath the free edge of the nail

nail body

The visible part of the nail that attaches it to the skin.

lunula

the half-moon shaped, whitish area at the base of a nail where a thicker germinal layer exists

free edge

Distal end of nail not in contact with the skin

nail root

the end of a nail lying beneath the skin

nail matrix

Thickened portion of stratum basale proximal to the nail root and is responsible for nail growth
