Elementary statistics chapter 2

Bargraph

Vertical or horizontal bars who is heights represent the frequencies of the data

Bargraph

categorical frequency distribution

used for data that can be placed in specific categories such as nominal or ordinal level data

categorical frequency distribution

class

raw data placed in to a qualitative or quantitative category

class boundaries

the numbers that separate classes without forming gaps between them

class boundaries

the numbers used to separate the classes, but without the gaps created by class limits

class midpoint

the sum of consecutive lower class limits divided by 2

class midpoint

class width

the difference between consecutive lower class limits

class width formula

(maximum data value) - (minimum data value) /
number of classes

compound bar graphs

Bar graphs used to compare data for two or more groups

compound bar graphs

cumulative frequency distribution

the sum of the frequencies accumulated up to the upper boundary of a class in a frequency distribution

dotplot

A simple graph that shows each data value as a dot above its location on a number line.

frequency

number of data values contained in a specific class

frequency distribution

the organization of raw data in table form, using classes and frequencies

frequency polygon

line graph for frequencies at the midpoint of the classes.
frequencies are the height

grouped frequency distribution

a distribution used when the range is large and classes of several units in width are needed

histogram

A graph of vertical bars, of various heights, representing the frequencies of a distribution

lower class limit

the lowest data value that can fit in a class

ogive

a graph that represents the cumulative frequencies for the classes in a frequency distribution

open-ended distribution

a frequency distribution that has no specific beginning value or no specific ending value

Pareto chart

chart that uses vertical bars to represent frequencies for a categorical variable

raw data

data collected in original form

relative frequency graph

a graph using proportions instead of raw data as frequencies

stem and leaf plot

a data plot that uses part of a data value as the stem and part of the data value as the leaf to form groups or classes

ungrouped frequency distribution

a distribution that uses individual data and has a small range of data

upper class limit

the highest data value that can fit in a class

pie chart

circle that is divided into sections according to the percentage of frequencies in each category of the distribution

time series graph

represents data that occur over a specific period of time
line graph
