Systems Part 4 (APU, fire protection, lights, and misc.)

What powers the fire detection for the engines and the APU

The essential buss

What powers the engine and APU fire protection

Engines are powered by the hot bus, APU on essential 2

How is fire detection accomplished on the engines and APU

Fire loops

How does a fire loop work

It is a sealed tube with helium in it and an inner tube with hydrogen. The tube will keep constant pressure on an integrity switch to see if the tube has been ruptured, i.e. if very intense fire has cut through it. The tube also has an alarm switch that w

How is fire detection for the lav and baggage compartment accomplished

With smoke detectors

How many fire loops does the APU have

One

How many fire loops do the engines have

Two, one around the engine and one in the pylon

If you get a fire alarm for an engine or APU and then a short time later it goes out and you have a fire detect fail, is there a fire?

Yes, the fire burned through the fire loop

Where does the engine fire extinguishing agent spray

Between the shroud and the nacelle

If fire extinguishing for the engines or the APU is not successful are there any other fail safes to keep the fire from spreading

They are designed to burn and fall of the plane

What is the main difference between "Engine fire, severe damage, or separation" and "engine precautionary shutdown

On the precautionary shutdown we do not pull the handle because we MAY try to restart it later

How many engine fire bottles are there

Two

What are the time limitations on the fire detection test and what happens if they are exceeded

3 - 10 seconds
- Less than 3 seconds and the bag fire light may stay on
- More than 10 seconds and the APU will think it's on fire and shutoff

If the plane is in ground safe mode and you come back and the APU is on fire, would the APU fire extinguishing button work, why or why not?

No. The APU fire bottle is on essential 2. When the APU senses a fire it will shutdown, so essential 2 would no longer be powered

Can firing the baggage fire bottle cause any detection errors

Yes, the extinguishing agent can be detected as smoke

Where doe the lavatory fire extinguisher discharge to

The waste bin

How does the lavatory fire extinguishing system work

It is automatic. Heat will melt a plug in the fire extinguisher releasing the agent

How many fire bottles does the baggage compartment have

Two, one rapid discharge and one metered bottle

How long will the metered bottle in the baggage compartment last

50 minutes

What chemical is in the fire extinguishers

Halon, except for one water bottle on the XR

How many walk around fire bottles do we have

Three

How does the baggage fire detection work

When the smoke detector detects smoke it will do a few things.
- Send an EICAS message
- Light the bag smoke light
- Send a signal to shutoff the baggage compartment fan

What should you ensure before firing the bag fire bottles

There is a bag fire light AND and EICAS. If you only get the light, do not fire the bottle

Why will the baggage fan turn off when smoke is detected

To seal the compartment so the extinguisher isn't evacuated

What does pushing the baggage fire extinguisher button do

- Sends another signal to turn off the baggage fan
- Fires two bottles in sequence
--- High discharge fire bottle
--- Metered flow fire bottle

In what form is the crew oxygen supplied

Gaseous

Where should the temperature for the crew oxygen level be read from

In the cabin

Where can the crew oxygen level be read

- On the MFD
- On the external servicing point

How can you tell if the crew oxygen system has been over-pressurized

The blowout indicator on the side of the plane

In what mode should the crew oxygen mask be stored

100%

Describe the different modes on the crew oxygen masks

- Emergency - 100% under positive pressure
- 100% - pure oxygen under normal pressure
- Normal - mix of oxygen and normal air

When would you use the emergency mode on the crew oxygen mask

Smoke in the cockpit

What is an easy way to remember how to get into emergency mode on the mask

Rotate towards the captain

How is oxygen supplied for the passengers

Using chemical oxygen generators

When will the passenger masks automatically drop

14,000 feet 500 feet

When the masks drop, does that start the flow to the mask

No, the lanyard must be pulled to start it

How long does the passenger oxygen last for

12 minutes

What is a positive indication that the passenger masks have dropped

The light is on

What is the duration of the walk around oxygen bottles

30 minutes

What does an OXYGEN LO PRESS indication mean

400 psi, 12 minutes remaining for a crew of three

How many ways are there to tune a radio

3.5
- Comm 1 w/ comm 1
- Cross tune with the 1/2 button
- Tune both with the FMS
- Comm 2 with the TBCH

Is the TBCH a radio

No, it's just another way to tune comm 2

What button do you need to press before you can tune with the TBCH

EMER

What activates the flight data recorder

Beacon light on or weight off wheels

How far back will the CVR record

2 hours

When does the CVR turn on

When the plane is powered

How much time will the CVR erase feature erase

The last half hour

How do you test the CVR

Press the test button and look for a one second blip in the yellow light

How do you erase CVR

- WOW
- Brakes set
- Push the erase button

How man PBEs on the plane

Three

According to the FARs where should the PBEs be located

Within three feet of the fire extinguisher

If you push EMER on the comm panel will you have interphone between the two pilots

No

If you have a single FMS and both pilots are in long range nav what color will the needles be

Yellow
