Chapter 50 Procedure 50-2

Preliminary Steps

Assist in administration of the local anesthetic agent

Preliminary Steps

If an alginate impression is needed to fabricate the provisional coverage, the impression is obtained at this time. In addition, an alginate impression of the opposing arch is taken

Preliminary Steps

If a silicone two-step impression method is used, the first impression is obtained at this time

Preliminary Steps

If this procedure involves a tooth-colored restoration, the shade is selected at this time

Tooth Preparation

Throughout the preparation, maintain a clear operating field by using the HVE to retract the lips and tongue and to remove water and debris.

Tooth Preparation

The dentist uses diamond stones in the high-speed handpiece to remove all decay or fractured portions of the tooth.
Purpose: Diamond stones are used during crown preparation because they can rapidly remove tooth structure

Tooth Preparation

Assist in bur changes as necessary while the dentist reduces tooth bulk and completes the preparation using burs of different shapes

Tooth Preparation

When the preparation is complete, gingival retraction cord is placed

Tooth Preparation

Assist in readying the final impression material

Tooth Preparation

Before transferring the light-bodied material, transfer cotton pliers for the dentist to remove the gingival retraction cord.
Note: The dentist may want to rinse and dry the sulcus before applying the light-bodied material

Tooth Preparation

While the dentist is applying the light-bodied material, ready the tray with heavy-bodied material

Tooth Preparation

Have the air-water syringe available for the dentist to "blow" air around the preparation.
Purpose: This procedure thins out the material, allowing it to flow better within the sulcus and around the margins.

Tooth Preparation

Retrieve the light-bodied material syringe from the dentist and transfer the tray, ensuring that the dentist can grasp the handle and insert the tray properly.

Tooth Preparation

After the recommended time has passed for the material to set, the dentist will remove the tray

Tooth Preparation

The occlusal registration is obtained

Tooth Preparation

Provisional coverage is fabricated and is temporarily cemented to protect the prepared teeth

Tooth Preparation

The patient is scheduled for a cementation appointment and then is dismissed.
Note: Ensure that the laboratory has sufficient time to fabricate the crown before scheduling the patient for another appointment

Tooth Preparation

After the dentist writes the laboratory prescription, prepare the case and send it to the laboratory

Documentation

Document the procedure.
