AQA Circuit symbols

Ammeter

measures the current in a circuit. must be placed in series

battery

more than one cell in series. provides the potential difference.

cell

provides the potential difference

closed switch

a switch that has turned the circuit 'on'

open switch

a switch that has turned the circuit 'off'

diode

Only allows current through in one direction

fuse

melts when the current is too large

lamp

a bulb in a circuit

LDR - light dependent resistor

it's resistance varying with the intensity of light. low light = resistance high = current low
high light = resistance low = current high

LED - Light emitting diode

only lets current through in one direction. when it does light is given off

resistor

a component of fixed resistance

thermistor

it's resistance varies with temperature
low temp = resistance high = current low
high temp = resistance low = current high

variable resistor

a component that allows you to change the resistance

voltmeter

measures potential difference (voltage). must be placed in parallel.
