Syphilis

STD Caused by bacterium that can cause ulcers or chancres. Can spread through blood, damaging nervous system and other body organs. Can be passed to newborns during childbirth.
Symptoms:
Phase 1 (10-90 Days):
Painless Ulcer (chancre) at place where bacteria entered the body
Phase 2 (2-8 weeks after infection):
Fever
Rash
Swollen Lymph Nodes
Joint Pain
Muscle Aches
Phase 3 (2 or more years after infection):
Heart And Nervous System Damage including Blindness and loss of mental abilities

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

STD Caused by a group of viruses that can cause genital warts in males and females and cervical cancer in females.

Warts Can Be Surgically Removed, Frozen, Or Treated With Medication, But Will Often Return

Genital Herpes

STD Caused by a viral infection in the genital area. Caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). Two Types of Virus: HSV1 and HSV2. Both types can be passed to newborn infants from mother.
Symptoms:
HSV1:
Cold Sores and Blisters around Mouth
HSV2:
Mild or No Symptoms
Red Bumps, Blisters and Recurrent Sores Usually On Or Around Genitals
Fever With 1st Infection
Swollen Lymph Nodes
Treatment:
No Cure. Anti-viral medication can shorten outbreaks and reduce frequency.
If Untreated:
Infected person remains infected for life
Newborns of Infected Women:
Infections of Liver, Brain, Skin, Eyes, and Mouth

Hepatitis

Inflammation of the liver. 2 different virus cause Hep-B and Hep-C, which are life threatening forms of Hepatitis. There are other Hepatitis viruses that are not sexually transmitted
Symptoms:
Gaundice (Yellowing of the skin)
Tiredness and muscle aches
Fever
Loss of Appetite
Darkening of the urine
Treatment:
No Cure for Hep-B or Hep-C
Medications may help stop spread of the virus
Individuals with severe liver damage may need a liver transplant
Vaccine available to prevent Hep-B

Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus

Virus that primarily infects cells of the immune system and causes AIDS. Passed by exchange of body fluids (Blood, Semen, Vaginal Fluid, Breast Milk). Exchange Usually Takes Place During Sexual Activity Or By Sharing Drug Injection Equipment

Pubic Lice (Crabs)

Strain of lice found in pubic hair of the infected. Lice crawl on the skin and lay eggs on the hair. The lice are spread by skin to skin contact.

Infected individuals must wash clothes and bed linens in hot water to kill all remaining lice and their eggs

Scabies

Tiny mites that burrow into the skin of an infected person. Spread by skin to skin contact
Symptoms:
Intense itching in the infected area
Treatment:
Medication can kill the mites
Infected individuals must wash clothes and bed linens in hot water to kill all remaining mites and their eggs
If Untreated:
Skin Damage can occur

Trichomoniasis

Caused by a protozoan (single celled angle a little larger than a bacterium). Males may not have symptoms, but can give the disease to others.

Can be cured with prescribed medication
