7th Grade Life Science - Genetics Assessment

Gene

The inherited bits of information that are passed directly from the parent's cells to the child's cells
A section of DNA

Allele

Different or alternative forms of genes.

Dominant Gene

A trait that appears in the offspring.
Type of gene that is stronger and appears more often.

Recessive Gene

A trait this is hidden in the offspring.
Type of gene that is weaker and appears less often.

Homozygous

An organism that has two identical alleles for a trait

Heterozygous

An organism that has two different alleles for a trait

Genotype

The gene's that an organism has that make up it's traits.
An organism's genetic makeup or allele combinations.

Phenotype

An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits.

Breeding

The producing of offspring through mating.

Punnett Square

A chart that shows all the possible combinations of alleles that can result from a genetic cross.
Tool scientists use to predict the likelihood of certain traits. Anytime a dominant gene appears, the offspring will have the dominant trait.

Lowercase letter

Recessive genes are always represented by this type of letter.

Uppercase letter

Dominant genes are always represented by this type of letter.

Offspring

A new organism produced by one or more parents.
