Math 8: Pre-Algebra Vocabulary

A term that does not change

Constant

A number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression.

Coefficient

A quantity that may change within the context of a mathematical problem; represented by a single letter (commonly "x")

Variable

A mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables.

Expression

All whole numbers (both positive and negative) and zero.

Integer

Any number that can be expressed as a fraction

Rational Numbers

Any real number which cant be expressed as a fraction of two integers

Irrational Numbers

The set of all rational and irrational numbers. They type of numbers we normally use.

Real Numbers

the number you divide by

Divisor

the answer to a division problem

Quotient

the answer to a multiplication problem

Product

the answer to a subtraction problem

Difference

the answer to an addition problem

Sum

the top number in a fraction

Numerator

The bottom number in a fraction

Denominator

The steepness of a line on a graph, incline

Slope

less than 90 degrees

Acute

the distance across a circle through its center

Diameter

The distance from the center of a circle to any point on the circle

Radius

Coordinate (0, 0). The point where the x-axis and y-axis meet

Origin

A transformation that "flips" a figure over a mirror or reflection line.

Reflection

A transformation that "slides" each point of a figure the same distance in the same direction.

Translation

a CORNER or point where lines meet

Vertex

a number that has no factor but ITSELF and 1

Prime

Numbers that are multiplied together to get a product

Factors

numbers you say when you skip count. Multiples of 2 are: 2,4,6,8,...
