No Solution (Quadratics)

When there is no value that satisfies a given equation.

Non-linear Function

Any function that does not make a straight line.

One Solution (Quadratics)

Binomial

An expression containing two terms.

Coefficient

Constant of Variation

The number that relates two variables that are directly or inversely proportional.

Origin

Where the x and y-axes meet. (0,0)

Parabola

The U shaped graph of a quadratic function.

Parallel

Two lines that never intersect. They have the same slope.

Continuous Data

Data that consists of all numbers on an interval.

Perimeter

Perpendicular

Two lines that intersect to form 90 degree angles. They have opposite reciprocal slopes.

Point-Slope Form

Polynomial

An expression that contains several terms including coefficients, variables, and exponents.

Dependent Variable

The variable that represents the output of a function. Usually the y-variable.

Positive Correlation

A relationship between two variables such that as one increases, so does the other.

Product

When two numbers are multiplied together.

Quadratic Equation

An equation whose highest power is a 2.

Direct Variation

An equation of the form y = kx. Passes through the origin and is a straight line.

Discrete Data

A data set that consists of only certain numbers in an interval.

Distributive Property

Allows you to multiply an expression by multiply each term individually and then adding the products.

Domain

The set of all possible input values of a function. The x-values.

Quadratic Function

A non-linear function whose highest power is a 2. makes a parabola when graphed.

Quadratic Parent Function

The most basic quadratic function. y = x^2

Quotient

When two numbers are divided.

Range

The set of all possible output values for a function.

Exponent

When a number is raised to a power (multiplied by itself).

Exponential Decay

When a value decreases by a constant multiple.

Exponential Growth

When a value increases by a constant multiple.

Exponential Function

Rate of Change

Another way to say slope

Reciprocal

One divided by the number. Flip the fraction.

Roots

The solutions, zeros or x-intercepts of a quadratic function.

Factor

When you break an expression down into smaller expressions multiplied together.

Function

An expression or equation for which every input has exactly one output. No repeating x's. Passes the vertical line test.

Simplify

To use the rules of arithmetic and algebra to rewrite an expression.

Function Notation

Independent Variable

The variable that represents the input of a function. Usually the x-variable.

Inequality

The relation between two expressions that are not equal.

Slope

The rate of change between any two points on a line.

Slope intercept form

Solution

A value that satisfies an equation. For a quadratic it is also called a root, zero, x-intercept.

Solve

To isolate a variable and/or identify a value that satisfies an equation.

Intersection

The point where two lines cross.

Intercept

The place where a graph crosses the x or y-axis.

Standard Form

Ax + By = C
y = ax^2 + bx + c

System of Equations

Two or more lines. The solution to a system is where these two lines intersect.

Term

One piece of an expression. No addition or subtraction.

Inverse Variation

An equation of the form y = k/x

Like Terms

Terms whose variables and exponents are the same.

Linear Function

A function whose graph is a line.

x-intercept

Where a graph crosses the x-axis. (x, 0)

y-axis

The vertical axis.

y-intercept

Where a graph crosses the y-axis. (0, y)
