Composite Filling Procedure

Step 1

Determine the shade of the tooth.

Step 2

Dr. uses anesthetic to numb tooth after the assistant places topical.

Step 3

Dr. uses high speed to prep tooth.

Step 4

Dr. uses slow speed to remove decay.

Step 5

Dr. rinses with water to clear off debris.

Step 6

Dr. places tofflemire with matrix band around tooth.

Step 7

Dr. places the wedge between teeth.

Step 8

Dr. uses the explore to check the seal of band at the base of the interproximal area.

Step 9

Dr. uses ball burnisher band against adjacent tooth to create tight contact.

Step 10

Dr. rinses tooth again with water to remove blood or debris.

Step 11

Dr. applies acid etch to prepared enamel and dentin areas.

Step 12

Allow to etch for approximately 15 seconds.

Step 13

Dr. rinses off acid etch with water.

Step 14

Dr. applies 5 coats of A/B primer to slightly moist dentin.

Step 15

Dr. air dries for 5 seconds.

Step 16

Dr. applies resin on dentin and enamel and thinned with slight air blowing.

Step 17

Assistant light cures for 5 seconds.

Step 18

Dr. places moist composite filling material in several increments and light cures after each one.

Step 19

The toffelmire, matrix band, and wedge are removed.

Step 20

Dr. adjusts filling material with finishing burs and sharp blade.

Step 21

The bite is checked with occlusion paper held by the assistant.

Step 22

Dr. smooths and polishes the filling.

Step 23

Dr. checks contact areas with floss.

Step 24

Final rinse with water.
