Chemical Hemostatic Agents

absorbable gelatin

Purified porcine gelatin powder or compressed form, and is used on areas of capillary bleeding, deposits fibrin forming a clot; aka - Gelfoam.

absorbable collagen

Bovine collagen activates coagulation by aggregation of platelets, applied dry; aka - Collastat, Superstat, Helistat, Lyostypt.

microfibrillar collagen

Hydrochloric acid salt of purified bovine corium collagen, applied dry promotes adhesion of platelets and prompt fibrin deposition; aka - Avitene, INSTAT.

oxidized cellulose

Aborbable oxidation when on contact with blood, applied dry and clot forms as gel; aka - Surgicel, Surgicel Nu-Knit.

phenol and alcohol

Used to electrocoagulate tissue across lumen of appendix. Caustic and may cause severe burns.

epinephrine (adrenalin)

Powerful vasoconstrictor, and prolongs action of local anesthetics to decrease bleeding.

silver nitrate

Astringent and antimicrobial, seals areas of surgical incisions.

thrombin

Enzyme extracted from bovine blood that accelerates coagulation of blood. Used as a dry powder or solution.

zeolite beads

Derived from volcanic pumice and causes hemostasis by absorbing water from blood; aka - QuikClot.
