Plot

Process of the resolution of the conflict

Conflict that occurs within the character

External

Conflict that occurs outside the character

Flat

When the author emphasizes a single important trait

Round

When the author presents a complex, three-dimensional character.

Static

A character who changes little over the course of the story.

Dynamic

A character who does change over the course of the story.

Setting

The time, place, and social circumstances of the story

Situational

A type of irony where what one expects to happen and what actually does differ

Verbal

A type of irony where a person says one thing but means something else

Dramatic

A type of irony where the reader knows something that the characters do not.

Point of View

The perspective from which a story is told

1st Person

POV when the narrator is a character in the story

3rd Person Omniscient

POV when the narrator enters the minds of all the characters

3rd Person Limited

POV when the narrator is limited to the mind of one or a few characters

3rd Person Objective

POV when the narrator does not enter a single mind

Symbolism

The use of something that means itself while standing for something larger

Universal

A symbol that is common to all of Western society

Contextual

A symbol used in a particular way by an individual author

Tone

The author's attitude towards the subject

Mood

The feeling that the writer creates for the reader

Theme

The author's observation about life, written as a sentence in a universal manner.

Climax

Point of greatest tension and emotional intensity.

Crisis

The turning point in the conflict / plot of the story.
