What do you look for first when naming an acid?
You see if the anion contains oxygen or not.
What if the anion does not contain oxygen?
Hydro-
+ anion root
+ -ic
--------
So you get: hydro(anion root)ic acid
What if the anion does contain oxygen?
Check the ending of the anion. (will be either -ite or -ate)
What if the anion (containing oxygen) ends in "-ite
anion or element root
+ -ous
--------
(root)ous acid
What if the anion (containing oxygen) ends in "-ate
anion or element root
+ -ic
--------
(root)ic acid
