Strong pulsation of the midline abdomen noted with palpation

Pain when releasing from abdominal palpation, also called Blumberg sign

Retention

Keeping in the body of what normally should be discharged, such as urine or feces

Retractions

Visible sinking of the skin between ribs during breathing, indicative of respiratory distress and use of accessory muscels

Rhinitis

Inflammation of the nasal cavities

Romberg sign

Falling to one side when standing with feet together and eyes closed

Rhonchi

Coarse rattling respiratory sound; often thick mucous sound by auscultation of the lungs

Right atrium

Chamber in the heart that receives deoxygenated blood from the body

Chamber in the hearth that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs

Rigidity

Stiffness of the abdominal wall muscles due to an acute abdominal process

Rovsing sign

Pain in the RLQ when the LLQ is palpated (indicative of appendicitis)

SA node

Sinoatrial node, termed the pacemaker of the heart

Salpingectomy

Removal of fallopian tube

Salpingo-oophorectomy

Removal of an ovary and fallopian tube
