Tolstoy's parable does apply to our culture today by all may be right but tomorrow the evil one may tempt you which means you are happy wiith what you have today but tomorrow you want more.

Yes Pahom did get what he deserved because he continued to want more and more land and he wouldn't stop no matter what than he dies because of it.
