Math 7 Chapter 1 Vocabulary

complex fraction

A fraction A/B where A or B are fractions and B does not equal zero.

constant of proportionality

A constant ratio or unit rate of two variable quantities. It is also called the constant of variation.

constant rate of change

The rate of change in a linear relationship.

constant of variation

The constant ratio in a direct variation. It is also called the constant of proportionality.

coordinate plane

A plane in which a horizontal number line and a vertical number line intersect at their zero points. Also called a coordinate grid.

cross products

The product of the numerator of the other ratio. The cross products of any proportion are equal. The products of the terms on the diagonals when two ratios are compared. If the cross products are equal, then the ratios form a proportion.

dimensional analysis

The process of including units of measurement when you compute.

direct variation

The relationship between two variable quantities that have a constant ratio.

equivalent ratios

Two ratios that have the same value.

nonproportional

The relationship between two ratios with a rate or ratio that is not constant.

proportion

An equation stating two ratios with a constant rate or ratio. A statement of equality of two ratios.

proportional

The relationship between two ratios with a constant rate or ratio.

ordered pair

A pair of numbers used to locate a point in the coordinate plane. The ordered pair is written in this form: (x-coordinate, y-coordinate).

origin

The point of intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis in a coordinate plane. The origin is at (0,0).

quadrant

One of the four regions into which the two perpendicular number lines of the coordinate plane separate the plane.

rate

The ratio that compares Two quantities with different kinds of units.

rate of change

A rate that describes how one quantity changes in relation to another and usually expressed as a unit rate.

slope

The rate of change between any two points on a line. The ratio of vertical change to horizontal change. It tells how steep the line is.

unit ratio

A rate where denominator is one unit.

unit rate

A rate that is simplified so that it has a denominator of one unit.

x-axis

The horizontal number line im a coordinate plane.

x-coordinate

The first number of an ordered pair. It corresponds to a number on the x-axis.

y-axis

The vertical number line in a coordinate plane.

y-coordinate

The second number of an ordered pair. It corresponds to a number on the y-axis.

Ratio

a comparison of two numbers by divisions

type of percent that compares the final and original amounts

Equation

mathmatical sentence stating that two expressions are equal

Error

type of percent that compares the inaccuracy of an estimate to the actual amount

the amount od money deposited or borrowed

Tip

gratuity

DIscount
