A warship equipped with iron plating for protection

What is a casualty?

A soldier who is killed, wounded, captured or missing in battle

What is the Emancipation Proclamation?

Decree issued by President Lincoln freeing enslaved people in those parts of the Confederacy still in rebellion on January 1,1863

Why was Lincolns call for blockade of all Southern ports significant?

This would mean that there would be fighting on the seas

Who won the battle of Bull Run the first time?

The Confederates pulled off a win and this shocked the Northerners. The Northerners realized that the war would be long and difficult

How did Lincoln react to the defeat at Bull Run?

He named a new general, George B. McClellan, to head the Union army in the East and he called on more volunteers

What was the Unions goal in the West?

They wanted to control the Mississippi River and tributaries

Why did the Union want to control the Mississippi?

Union ships could then prevent Louisiana ,Arkansas, and Texas from supplying the eastern Confederacy and the Union could use the rivers to move into the South

No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be excepted." and this means no terms would be excepted when surrendering

The Merrimack was a damaged frigate that had been abandoned by the Union that the South made an ironclad and renamed it the Virginia

The North had made its own new ironclad and named it the Monitor

Neither ship won but the stirring clash raised spirits in both the North and South

The Union won barely and both armies had lost more than 23,000 soldiers
