Lesson 1: Cell Cycle

Cell Theory

Same as #1 (theory that states that all organisms are made of cells, all cells are produced by other living cells, and the cell is the most basic unit of life)

Single-Celled Organisms

Organism made of only one cell - prokaryotes such as bacteria

Multicellular Organisms

Organisms made of 2 or more cells such as plants and animals - eukaryotes

Asexual Reproduction

Creates an exact copy of the parent - binary fission such as that in bacteria or when a sea star splits part of its body or the regrowth of both parts when a planarian is cut in half - NO GENETIC VARIATION

Sexual Reproduction

Gametes fuse creating genetic variation - this is why you and your siblings look different

Cell Cycle

Regular pattern of growth, DNA duplication, and cell division that occurs in plant and animal cells, or cells with nuclei.

Interphase

The part of the cell cycle devoted to copying of the organelles (G1), copying DNA (S) and growth of the cell (G2) in preparation for cell division (mitosis)

Mitosis

Cell division

Apoptosis

Programmed cell death

What are the 3 major principles of the cell theory?

1. all organisms are made of cells
2. all cells come from other living cells
3. Cells are alive and are the most basic unit of organization

What are three reasons that result in apoptosis?

1. Cells that have damaged DNA
2. Cells that are no longer needed
3. Cells that are harmful to the body

What is the cause(s) of cancer?

Uncontrolled cell division - checkpoints are skipped

Which type of reproduction is the fastest?

Asexual reproduction is faster than sexual reproduction
