Benefits of Massage

Relax client & facial muscles;
Improve metabolism/activate sluggish skin;
Stimulate blood/lymph circulation;

Massage

manual or mechanical manipulation by rubbing, kneading, or other methods that stimulate metabolism and circulation

Duration of Massage

10-15 minutes during a facial.
*This will vary depnding on client's skin analysis (i.e. acne skin should not be stimulated with massage)

Pressure & Massage

Too much pressure on the face can weaken elasatin fibers and break down elasticity.

Mental Focus & Massage

Do not let mental distractions reduce your focus onthe massage and your client

Direction of Massage

ALWAYS from insertion to origin. This avoids breaking down tissue and potentially causing premature aging.

Origin-portion of muscle @ fixed attachment

Contraindications for Massage

contagious diseases;
inflamed acne;
sunburn;
sensitive skin.
*Cancer patients require a light touch b/c of lymph nodes.

due to repetitive movements, muscle & tendon strain and fatigue due to improper or poor posture

Scope of Massage Practice

Esthetician's massage services are limited to: the face, neck, shoulders and decollete.

Types of Classic Swedish Massage Movements

Effleurage
Petrissage
Friction
Tapotement
Vibration

Effleurage

soft, continuous stroking movement applied with the fingers (digital) and palms (palmar) in a slow and rhythmic manner.
Most impt of 5 massage mov'ts; used in conjunction with other types of massage (i.e. shiatsu)

Digital Effleurage

Fingers are used on smaller surfaces (forehead & face).

Palmar Effleurage

Palms are used on larger surfaces (back & shoulders).

Petrissage

Kneading mov't that stimulates underlying tissues. Performed on fleshier parts of face, shoulders, back and arms
As tissues are lifted from their underlying structures, they are squeezed, rolled or pinched with a light, firm pressure.

Efffects of Petrissage

Can stimulate sebum production and activate circulation and sluggish skin.

Friction-Definition

rubbing mov't; pressure is maintained on the skin while the fingers or palms are moved over the underlying structures.
Circular mov'ts on the scalp, arm and hands. Lighter circular friction mov'ts are used on face/neck

Effects of Friction

Stimulates circulation and glandular activity of the skin.

3. Wringing

Tapotement

a/k/a percussion; incl tapping, patting and hacking movements.
Only liight, digital tapping should be used on the face
Most stimulating and should be used w/ discretion.

Effects of Tapotement

good for toning and beneficial for sluggish skin

Slapping

Keep wrists flexible so palms come in ctc w/ skin in light, firm, rapid strokes. One hand follows the other. W/ each slapping stroke lift the flesh slightly

Hacking

chopping mov't w/ the wrists and outer edges of hands; move in fast, light, firm flexible motions in alternate succession
