Alliteration

Repetition of initial consonant sounds, ex: American Airlines, Best Buy, Coca-Cola

Allusion

A reference to another work of literature, person, or event

Analogy

A comparison of two different things that are similar in some way

Antithesis

creates contract by placing two parallel but opposite ideas in a sentence

Parallelism

similarity of structure in a pair or series of related words, phrases, or clauses

Consonance

Repetition of a consonant sound within two or more words in close proximity.

Diction

Ellipsis

the omission of a word or phrase which is grammatically necessary but can be deduced from the context

Hyperbole

exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.

Imagery

visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work.

Irony

A contrast between expectation and reality

Oxymoron

A figure of speech that combines opposite or contradictory terms in a brief phrase.

Personification

A figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes

Symbolism

A device in literature where an object represents an idea.
