Module 2 Lesson 1 Vocabulary

Algorithm

a procedure for solving a mathematical problem.

Composite Number

a number with more then two factors.

Distributive Property

mutiplying the sum of two or more addends by a number will give the same result as multiplying each addend individually by the number and then adding the products together.

dividend

the number being divided.

divisor

number that is being divided.

Estimate

to make an approximate calculation, often based on rounding.

factors

a number or algebraic expression that divides another that divides another number or expression evenly-with no remainder.

multiples

a sequence of product using the same base number multiplied by different numbers.

Prime Number

a number that has exactly two factors; a number that can only be divided evenly by itself and one.

Reciprocal

two numbers whose product is 1; ex. n x 1/=1; may be written as/ 1/n or n' to; get the reciprocal of a number, divide 1 by the number.

greatest common factor

The highest or greatest common factor that will divide two or more other numbers exactly.

least common multiple

The smallest number that is the multiple of two other number.

Multiplicative Inverse

also called the reciprocal-you may use the definition for 'reciprocal'.
