Algebra basics

variables

x, y, or any letter that can represent a number that we don't know

coefficient

a number that is in front of a variableA number multiplied by a variable.

Function

A relation for which each output has only one input. Can be tested on the coordinate plane with the vertical line test

linear

Equations that does not have any variables with an exponent. They form a lie when graphed.

y-intercept

A place where a function crosses the y-axis and is represented by b in the formula y=mx+b.

absolute value

The distance a number is from zero on a number line

range

All possible y values of a function

domain

All possible x values of a function

scientific notation

A decimal number (between 1 & 9.9) multiplied by 10 raised to any power.

zero exponent

Equal to 1

expression

a mathematical sentence with no equal sign

terms

individual parts of an expression (separated by a plus or a minus)

integers

whole numbers and their opposites

coordinate plane

A two-dimensional number line where the vertical line is called the y-axis and the horizontal is called the x-axis. These lines are perpendicular and intersect at their zero points called the origin.

order of operations

Parentheses, Exponents/Radicals, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

rational number

numbers that are able to written as a fraction (pretty decimals)

real number

all rational and irrational numbers

x-intercept

A place where a function crosses the x-axis represented by x in the formula y=mx+b.

standard form

ax + by = c

slope

steepness of a line, rise over run, rate of change

function notation

examples: f(x)=3x, g(x)=5x+2 , h(x)=10

slope intercept form

y = mx + b

linear equation

forms a line when graphed
