Paige's Combined Algebra Terms

Experimental probability

probability based on the repeated trials of an experiment

Rate of change

the relationship between two quantities that are changing, this is also slope

mean

an average of n numbers computed by adding some function of the numbers and dividing by some function of n

median

relating to or situated in or extending toward the middle

mode

the most frequent value of a random variable

range of data

The range is from the lowest value to the highest value. Eg. The range of ages in year 11 is from 15 to 17.

linear function

y=x or f(x)=x

slope

rise over run

parallel

lines in the same plane that do not intersect

perpendicular

intersecting at or forming right angles

x-intercept

x coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the x axis/ y coordinate of this point is zero

y-intercept

the y-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the y-axis

standard form of linear equation

Ax+By=C, C over B gets you the y intercept, C over A gets the x intercept, and B over A gets the slope. rules=leading coeffecient (A) cannot be negative. Cannot be a fraction. MUST be in the exact form.

slope-intercept form of linear equation

y = mx + b, where "m" is the slope of the line and "b" is the y-intercept.

system of linear equations

set of two or more equations with two or more variables

equation

A mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign

Inequality

A mathematical sentence that contains less than, greater than, less than or equal to, greater than or equal to, or not equal

coefficient

A number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression.

term

The parts of an expression that are added or subtracted

function

A relation in which every input value has a unique output value.

domain

the set of values of the independent variable for which a function is defined

range (of a function)

the set of all the values of the dependent variable or the y-coordinate

transformation

(mathematics) a function that changes the position or direction of the axes of a coordinate system

translation

(mathematics) a transformation in which the origin of the coordinate system is moved to another position but the direction of each axis remains the same

reflection

(mathematics) a transformation in which the direction of one axis is reversed

dilation

a transformation that enlarges or reduces a figure

similar

Figures that have the same shape but not necessarily the same size

proportion

an equation stating that two ratios are equal

integer

The set of whole numbers and their opposites

theoretical probability

the ratio of the number of ways an event can occur to the number of possible outcomes
