algebra

The part of mathematics in which letters and other general symbols are used to represent numbers and quantities in formulas and equations.

variable

A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y.

algebraic expression

A variable or combination of variables, numbers, and symbols that represents a mathematical relationship.

evaluate

To find the value of a mathematical expression

Combines numbers,using operators

coefficient

A numerical factor in a term of an algebraic expression.

constant

is a number on its own, or sometimes a letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number. Example: in "x + 5 = 9", 5 and 9 are constants

absolute value

The distance of a number from zero on the numberline. Always positive.

decimal

A number with one or more digits to the right of a decimal point.

fraction

A way to describe a part of a whole or a part of a group byusing equal parts.
