Protagonist
Usually the main character who is the focus of the reader's attention. Often changes in some way.
Antagonist
A character who opposes the main character. Typically known as the "bad guy". A character who struggles against the main character.
minor character
This character takes part in the events but is not the main focus of the story. Often helps the reader learn about the main character.
flat character
Very few personality traits are revealed about this character. The reader does not know a lot about this character.
round character
This character is fully developed. The author reveals many details about this characters features, behaviors and personality.
static character
This character does not change thoughout the story.
dynamic character
This character changes in some way throughout the course of the story.
characterization
The art of creating and developing a character.
direct characterization
The writer states a character's traits. He/She will tell a reader DIRECTLY what the character is like and what to expect.
indirect characterization
The author present you with information about a character, but allows a reader to make his or her won conclusions. The reader determines a character's traits through their behavior and actions.
External conflict
A struggle with a force outside one's self.
internal conflict
a struggle within one's self; a person must make some decision, overcome pain, quiet their temper, resist an urge
Man vs. man
(physical) The leading character struggles with his physical strength against other men, forces of nature, or animals.
Man vs. Circumstances
(classical) The leading character struggles against fate,, or the circumstances of life facing him/her.
Man vs. Society
(social) The leading character struggles against ideas, practices, or customs of other people.
Man vs. Himself/Herself
(psychological) The leading character struggles with himself/herself; with his/her own soul, ideas of right or wrong, physical limitation, choices, etc.
man vs. nature
A character struggles with the elements of nature.
