Story Elements

Antagonist

the cause of the problem for the protagonist. This does not have to be a person.

Climax

the highest point of emotion or action of the story; the turning point of the story.

conflict

the problem of the story. a struggle between opposing forces.

denouement

the wrap up to the story's ending.

dynamic character

a character who grows and changes, especially internally or emotionally, during the course of a literary work.

exposition

the beginning of the story that includes characters, setting, and conflict, especially the main conflict.

external conflict

the struggles for a character are created by outside forces.

falling action

events that occur after the climax; events leading to the end of the conflict.

hero

the main character of a story who is male.

heroine

the main character of a story who is female.

internal conflict

the struggles within or inside a characters heart or mind.

person vs person, person vs self, person vs nature, person vs society, person vs unknown, person vs fate/destiny, person vs machine/technology

mood

the feeling or emotion of the story that helps to create atmosphere

narrator

a speaker or character who tells the story

plot

the action of the story

point of view

the angle or perspective from which the story is told

protagonist

the main character of the story

Resolution

the solution to the story

rising action

events that occur before the climax and shows where the main character faces minot conflicts.

setting

the time, place, duration of a story

static character

a character that does not change during the course of a literary work

theme

the message or underlying meaning of the story

tone

the attitude of the author toward his or her subject matter.
