Unit 3 - Equations & Inequalities (Math 6/7 ACC)

Expressions

a mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers and/or variables

Coefficient

the number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression

Constant

A value that does not change

Equation

A mathematical sentence that contains an equals sign and shows that 2 expressions are equivalent.

Greater Than

a symbol to show a one value is greater than the other (>)

Inequality

A mathematical sentence that shows the relationship between quantities that are NOT equivalent

Integers

All whole numbers (both positive and negative) and zero.

Less Than

(<) is the symbol used to compare two numbers, with the smaller number given first

Operations

addition, subtraction, multiplication & division

Solution

an answer to a mathematical question

Variable

A letter used to represent one or more numbers

Isolate The Variable

The process used to solve an equation or inequality by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing both "sides" to reach a solution such as x=3 or y>10

Substitution

To replace a variable with a number in an algebraic expression

Sum

The result of adding numbers together.

Difference

The result when we subtract two numbers.

Product

The result when we multiply numbers.

Quotient

The result when we divide two numbers.

Inverse Operations

These "undo" each other: addition undoes subtraction and multiplication undoes division.
