7th Grade Math: Probability

Observation

The action or watching something (or someone) carefully, in order to gain information.

Percent

A ratio comparing a number to 100.

Ratio

A comparison of part to whole (part of the total number in ratio to total number) written as a fraction.

Complement

The opposite of the desired event.

Compound Event

An event made up of two or more simple events.

Event

An outcome or set of outcomes of an experiment or situation.

Perform Experiment

Any activity based on chance, such as tossing a coin.

Experimental Probability

The ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials, or times that the activity is performed.

Total Outcomes

All possibilities that result from an experiment.

Simple Event

An event consisting of only one outcome.

Experiment

A model of a simulation, often one that would be too difficult or too time-consuming to actually perform.

Trial

Each repetition or observation of an experiment.

P(event )

A number from 0 to 1 (or 0% to 100%) that describes how likely an event is to occur.

Data

Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.

Sample Space

The set of all possible outcomes

Theoretical probability

Probability based on reasoning written as a ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the number of possible outcomes.

Relative Frequency of Outcomes

The ratio of the number of times an event occurs in a series of trials of a chance experiment to the number of trials of the experiment performed.

Chance

The random outcomes of a given event.

Outcome

Another word for "event

Probability

The chance of an event happening that is represented as a ratio, decimal, or percent
