Obligation (Duty)

Responsibility

Selective Service (Draft)

law passed by Congress in 1917 that required all men from ages 21 to 30 to register for the military draft

Alien

a foreign-born resident of the United States who has not been naturalized

Immigrant

an individual who moves permanently to a new country

Law of Blood

at least one of your parents was a US citizen when you were born

Law of Soil

if you're born in the 50 states, an American territory, or a military base you are automatically a citizen at birth

Resident Alien

a person from a foreign nation who has established permanent residence in the United States, but who has not completed the naturalization process

Naturalization

the legal process to obtain citizenship
