first ten amendments to the constitution, which set forth basic rights guaranteed to all americans

freedom of religion

right to practice any religion or no religion at all

freedom of speech

right to express ideas and opinions as well as listen to the ideas and opinions of others

freedom of the press

right to express ideas in writing

freedom of assembly

right to hold public meeting

freedom of petition

right to ask the government to take or not take certain actions

1st Amendment

freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition

2nd Amendment

right to bear arms

3rd Amendment

can't force Americans to quarter, or give housing to, solders in peacetime

4th amendment

protects people from unreasonable searches and seizers, unless they have a search warrent

5th amendment

before a person can be brought to trail, they must be indicted. also protects a person against self- incrimination and from double jeopardy. due process of law and right to own private property

6th amendment

for a accused person to have a lawyer

7th amendment

trail by jury in certain kinds of cases that involve conflicts over money and property

8th amendment

court can't set bail that is excessive, or too high

9th amendment

freedom to live or travel anywhere in our nation, work at any job which we can qualify, to marry and raise a family, recieve a free education in public schools, join a political party a union and other legal groups

10th amendment

set aside many powers of government for the states or for the people, all powers not expressly given to the federal government or forbidden to the states by the constitution.
