MOT 4143 Chapter 7

Activity

a distinct scheduled portion of work performed during the course of a project

Activity

Building blocks of a project schedule

Plan Schedule Management

the process of establishing policies, procedures, and documentation for planning, developing, managing, executing, and controlling the project schedule

Define Activities

the process of identifying the specific actions that need to be performed to produce the project deliverables

Sequence Activities

the process of identifying and documenting relationships among the project activities

Estimate Activity Resources

the process of estimating the type and quantities of material, human resources, equipment, or supplies required to perform each activity

Estimate Activity Durations

the process of approximating the number of work periods needed to complete individual activities with estimated resources

Develop Schedule

the process of analyzing activity sequences, durations, resource requirements, and schedule constraints to create the project schedule

Control Schedule

the process of monitoring the status of the project activities to update project progress and managing changes to the schedule baseline to achieve the plan

Critical Path Method

used to estimate the minimum project duration and determine the amount of scheduling flexibility on the logical network paths within the schedule model

Activity on Node

a technique in which the schedules activities are represented by nodes and are graphically linked by one or more logical relationships to show the sequence in which the activities are performed

Activity on Arrow

a technique in which schedule activities are represented by arrows...schedule activites are connected at points called nodes

Predecessor Activity

an activity that logically comes before a dependent activity in a schedule

Successor Activity

a dependent activity that logically follows another activity in a schedule

Mandatory Dependency

relationship that is contractually required or inherent in the nature of the work (hard logic)

Discretionary Dependency

relationship that is established based on knowledge of best practices (soft logic; defined by project team)

External Dependency

involve an external interface with other projects

Finish to Start

a successor activity can not start until a predecessor activity has finished

Finish to Finish

a successor activity can not finish until a predecessor activity has finished

Start to Start

a successor activity can not start until a predecessor activity has started

Start to Finish

a successor activity cannot finish until a predecessor activity has started

Lead

the amount of time whereby a successor acitivity can be advanced with respect to a predecessor activity

Lag

the amount of time whereby a successor activity is required to be delayed with respect to a predecessor activity

Duration

the total number of work periods (not including holidays or other nonwork periods) required to complete a schedule activity, usually expressed as workdays or workweeks

Critical Path

the sequence of activities that represent the longest path through the project, which determines the shortest possible duration

Two Pass Method

used to determine the amount of slack each activity has

Forward Pass

A critical path method technique for calculating the early start and early finish dates by working forward through the schedule model from the project start date or a given point in time

Early Start Date

the earliest possible point in time when the uncompleted portions of a schedule activity can start, based on the schedule network logic, the data date, and any schedule constraints

Early Finish Date

the earliest point in time when uncompleted portions of a schedule activity can finish, based on the schedule network logic, the data date, and any schedule constraints

Backward Pass

a critical path method technique for calculating the late start and late finish dates by working backward through the schedule model from the project end date

Late Start Date

the latest possible point in time when the uncompleted portions of a schedule activity can start based on the schedule network logic, the scheduled completion date, and any schedule constraints

Late Finish Date

the latest possible point in time when the uncompleted portions of a schedule activity can finish based on the schedule network logic, the scheduled completion date, and any schedule constraints

Slack

#NAME?

Slack

the total amount of time a schedule activity may be delayed from its early start date without delaying the project finish date. Also known as total float

PERT

developed to aid understanding of how variability in the duration of individual activities impacts the entire project schedule

Monte Carlo Simulation

a process which generates hundreds or thousands of probable performance outcomes based on probability distributions for cost and schedule on individual tasks. The outcomes are then used to generate a probability distribution for the project as a whole

Grantt Chart

a bar chart of schedule information where activities are listed on the vertical axis, dates are shown on the horizontal axis, and activity duration are shown as horizontal bars placed according to start and end dates
