Domain
A taxonomic category above the kingdom level. The three domains are Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya.
Kingdom
A level of Classification. There are 6 of these: Animalia, Plantae, Protista, Fungi, Bacteria, Archaea
Aristotle
made the first Classification system (He lived 384-322 BC)
Carl Linnaeus
Father of taxonomy, developed binomial nomenclature
Carl Woese
developed 3 Domain system
Prokaryotic organisms
organisms that do not have a nucleus
Eukaryotic organisms
These organisms "carry" a nucleus and membrane bound organelles.
Unicellular
Made of a single cell
Multicellular
made of many cells
Autotrophs
Organisms that make their own food, producers
Heterotrophs
organisms that cannot make their own food, consumers
Decomposer
An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms, saprophyte
Archaebacteria
ancient life forms.live in extreme environments
Eubacteria
A kingdom that contains all prokaryotes except archaebacteria, "true" bacteria
Protista
eukaryotes that cannot be classified as animals, plants, or fungi, "nature's junk drawer", include amoeba and paramecium
Fungi
Heterotrophs, eukaryotic, include yeasts, mushrooms, and mildew
Plantae
eukaryotic, multicellular, autotrophic (make their own food), include trees, flowers
Animalia
multicellular, eukaryotic, heterotrophs whose cells do not have cell walls, includes dogs, fish and humans
