molecule

Group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.

compound

Substance that forms when two or more elements join chemically.

chemical formula

Group of chemical symbols and numbers that shows the number of atoms of each element in a molecule.

subscript

A number written slightly below and to the right of a chemical symbol that shows how many atoms of an element are in a compound.

crystal

A solid made up of particles that are arranged in a regular, repeating pattern.

mixture

Matter made up of two or more substances that are combined physically.

heterogeneous mixture

When substances are not distributed evenly throughout the mixture.

homogeneous mixture

Substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

solution

A homogeneous mixture when one substance is completely dissolved in another substance.

solute

The substance that dissolves.

solvent

The liquid that does the dissolving.

sifting

Separates the solid parts of a mixture by particle size by using a screen to sift materials.

filtration

Separates a solid from a liquid by using filter paper.

evaporation

Used to separate a solid from a liquid in a solution by being heated.
