Stoichiometry definitions

Stoichiometry

The calculation of the quantities of chemical elements or compounds involved in chemical reactions.

Mole

The number of constitutive entities in a sample of a substance is technically called its (chemical) amount.

Molar mass

Is a unit that enables scientists to calculate the weight of any chemical substance, be it an element or a compound. Molar mass is the sum of all of the atomic masses in a formula.

Molar volume

Is another way to view number density. The molar volume is the volume of 1 mole of substance.

Atomic weight

Atomic weight is the average mass of atoms of an element, calculated using the relative abundance of isotopes in a naturally-occurring element.

Monoatomic molecule

Having one atom in the molecule

Diatomic molecule

composed by two atoms.

Polynotomic molecule

Composed by more than three molecules.

Avogadro's Number

Number of units in one mole of any substance (defined as its molecular weight in grams), equal to 6.022140857 1023.

Unit Factor

Statements used in converting between units.

Formula Weight

The sum of the atomic weights of all atoms appearing in a given chemical formula.

Percent Composition

The mass percent of each element in a compound.

Empirical Formula

A chemical formula indicating the elements of a compound and their relative proportions.

Molecular Formula

A chemical formula indicating the numbers and types of atoms in a molecule.

Composition Stoichiometry

Allows us to determine the number of atoms present in a collection of molecules.

Reaction Stoichiometry

Determining the amount of substance that is consumed or produced by a reaction.

Mole Ratio

Is ?the ratio between the amounts in moles of any two compounds involved in a chemical reaction.

Limiting Reactant

Is the reactant that determines how much of the products are made.

Excess Reactant

The excess reactant is the reactant in a chemical reaction with greater amount than necessary to react completely with the limiting reactant.

Theoretical Yield

Is the quantity of a product obtained from the complete conversion of the limiting reactant in a chemical reaction.

Actual Yield

Is the amount of product that's actually there to be used at the end of the manufacturing process.

Percent Yield

Is the amount of a product made in the chemical reaction measured by dividing the amount of product by the amount of theoretical yield which could be created.

Molarity

The number of moles of solute per liter of solution.

Solute

The minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.

Solvent

Is a substance that dissolves a solute resulting in a solution.
