Chemistry Semester II Final Vocab

element

A pure substance containing only one type of matter which cannot be broken down by chemical methods.

Substance

compound made of several atoms or ions

Avogadro's number

The number of items in a mole, equal to 6.022x10^23

Mole

A group of atoms, molecules, or formula units that contain 6.022x10^23 of these items

Molar Mass

the mass in grams of 1 mol of an element is equal numerically to its atomic mass. The molar mass of a compound is equal to the sum of the masses of the elements in the formula.

Chemical Formula

the symbols and subscripts that represent the lowest whole-number ratio of atoms or ions in a compound

Atom

The smallest particle of an element that retains the characteristics of the elements

Molecular compound

A combination of atoms in which noble gas configurations are attained by electron sharing

ionic compound

A compound of positive and negative ions held together by ionic bonds

molecules

The smallest unit of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds

formula units

the group of ions represented by the formula of an ionic compound

empirical formula

The simplist or smallest whole-number ratio of the atoms in a formula

molecular formula

the actual formula that gives the number of atoms of each type of elements in the compound

mass percent

The percent by mass if the elements in a formula

chemical reaction

a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.

chemical equation

a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction in the

balanced chemical equation

...

coefficient

...

combination reaction
