A chronic disease of the central nervous system marked by damage to the myelin sheath. Plaques occur in the brain and spinal cord causing tremor, weakness, incoordination, paresthesia, and disturbances in vision and speech

- Medical hx
- Neuro exam
- Lab tests
- Ruling out other dx
- Evidence of damage in two separate areas of the CNS and damage must have occurred at two separate times at least 1 month apart

Relapsing Remitting MS (RRMS)

Relapses with either full recovery or some remaining neuro signs/symptoms; lack of disease progression between relapses

Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS)

Begins with RRMS disease followed by progression. Progression may include occasional relapses and plateaus

Primary Progressive MS (PPMS)

Progressive from onset, without plateaus or remission periods (may only see temporary improvements)

Progressive Relapsing MS (PRMS)

Progressive disease from onset but with clear acute relapses that may or may not resolve; intervals between relapses are marked by progression of the disease
