Blind spot

Region of the retina where an image cannot be formed. The site where the optic nerve leaves the eye.

Choroid

Layer under the sclera that contains pigment and blood vessels.

Ciliary muscle

Ring of muscle to which the suspensory ligaments are attached.

Cone

Cell that responds to bright light and colours in the eye.

Cornea

Transparent section of the sclera at the front of the eye.

Fovea

Area of the eye containing a large number of cone cells.

Iris

Coloured ring of tissue behind cornea. Controls the amount of light that enters the eye.

Lens

Structure in the eye that focuses light onto the retina.

Optic nerve

The sensory neurone that takes information from the eye to the brain.

Pupil

Hole in the iris that lets light into the eye.

Retina

Light-sensitive layer inside the eye.

Rod

Cell that reacts to dim light in the eye.

Sclera

The white outer coat of the eye.

Suspensory ligaments

Fibres that hold the lens in place.
