Abstract Ballet

Ballet based on an idea as opposed to that based on a story with emphasis on skillful execution of prescribed ballet movements

Ballet

Genre of dance originating with court dances of Italy and France. Based on five positions and prescribed movements named in French.

Body Articulation

Movement of the whole body and/or parts of the body through space.

Chair Dancing

Dancing while sitting in a chair using various movements executed from a seated position.

Choreography

The act of creating a dance, including the selection of steps, directions/arrangement of movement, and other components.

Elements of Dance

Space, time, force, intensity, body articulation

Energy

The amount of stress applied to a movement

Focal Point

Object or area on which the eye is focused

Folk Dance

Dance growing out of a particular culture and executed to its traditional music. Passed down through generations

Form

Structure or design of a dance composition

Genre

Category or classification of dance-that is ballet, jazz, folk, and so on.

Gesture

A movement by the hand or another part of the body to communicate an idea or emotion

Hand Jive

Sequence of movements executed mainly with the arms and hands.

Level

Height of the body as it relates to the floor

Locomotor Movement

Movement that takes the body from one place to another

Modern Dance

Genre of dance less prescriptive than ballet, emphasizing more self-expression

Narrative Ballet

Ballet based on a story in which dancers assume character roles

Nonlocomotor Movement (Axial)

Movement performed while remaining in one place

Patterns

Figures created by movement of feet over the floor in the course of a dance or exercise

Range

Refers to the size of a movement

Square Dance

Dance in which couples are arranged in a square formation

Tempo

Rate of speed at which movement is performed

Time

An element through which movement is organized

Variation

Any alteration applied to a given movement while at the same time allowing the movement to retain its basic character

Warmup

Particular movements/exercises designed to prepare the body and mind for involvement in dance
