Entropion

Ectropion

turning outward and sagging of the eyelid caused by muscle relaxation or weakness; reduces the washing action of tears leading to drying and ulcerations

Hordeolum

stye; is infection of the eyelid sweat glands or of the eyelid sebaceous gland
- red, swollen painful area occurs
TXT: warm compress 4 times a day and an antibacterial ointment
Remove ointment from eye before driving

Chalazion

inflammation of a sebaceous gland in the eyelid; redness and tenderness but painless swelling
s/s: eye fatigue, light sensitivity, and excessive tears
TXT: warm compresses 4 times daily, instillation of ophthalmic antibiotic ointment

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca

dry eye syndrome" results from changes in tear production, tear composition, or tear distribution
- drugs can reduce tears and dz such as RA, leukemia, sarcoidosis, and sjorgens syndrome; radiation or chemical burns
s/s: fb sensation, burning and itching

conjunctivitis

inflammation with or without infection of the conjunctiva

Allergic conjunctivitis

edema, burning sensation, bloodshot eye appearance, excessive tears, itching
TXT: vasoconstrictor and corticosteriod eyedrops

Bacterial conjunctivitis

pink eye" caused by s. aureus; blood vessel dilation, edema, tears and discharge (water at first and then mucous)
TxT: ophthalmic antibiotics
Wash hands after touching eye and before using eyedrops

Trachoma

chronic conjunctivitis caused by chlamydia; scars the conjunctiva and is a common cause of preventable blindness; first resembles bacterial and then follicles form on the upper conjunctiva causing inward eyelids and eyelid damage to cornea
