bias tape

- binding curved edges; never use it in areas requiring stability

hem tape

- sheer bias tricot tape: nylon and will blend with any fabric without adding bulk
- encases seam edges

elastics

- stretchy material
- ex: waistbands

tape measure

- made from fabric or flexible fiberglass
- take body measurements

seam gauge

- a ruler with an adjustable marker for measuring seam allowances and hems

hem gauge

- a multipurpose measuring tool
- curved, hem-shaped side that is used to mark standard hem depths
- straight side that is used like a ruler

grid & bias square rulers

- transparent rulers used for precision cutting
- various lengths & sizes

yardstick

- one yard in length
- measuring tool

shears

- cut fabric and should never be used on paper

scissors

- shorter blades than shears
- used to trim seamd, clip curves, and open buttonholes

pinking shear or scalloping shears

- zig zag shaper cuts and scalloped cuts
- finish raw edges

rotary cutter

- round blade turns and cuts fabric
- blade is pushed along the pattern line
- plastic mat is placed under the fabric to prevent damaging the tabletop

pins

- hold patterns on fabric when cutting & marking
- temporarily hold

pattern weights

- circular or shapes weights used to hold patterns

tracing(marking) paper

- coated paper that comes in an assortment of colors

tracing wheel

- a marking/cutting tool used for pattern markings

chalk

- pencil, powder, & small pieces

fabric marking pen

- come in several colors
- water - soluble & is capable to withstand heat

heat transfer pencil

- trace designs that will be decorated with paint, embroidery, or other embellishments
- press with a dry iron to transfer a permanent nonbleed design

needles

- come in various sizes & types

bobbins

- a small spool used to hold the lower thread in a sewing machine

top stitching guides

- to help you neatly place decorative machine stitching on the outside of sewn items

long handled tweezers

- bent at an angle that is especially useful for threading the loopers on a serger

stabilizers

- provide support for areae being decorated with apoliqu�() cutwork, decorative stitching, and machine embroidery

cut away stabilizer

- comes in various weights
- adhesive
- simply trim away excess stabilizer

tear away stabilizer

- very stable nonwoven product that comes in varrying weights as well as iron-on and adjesive-backed varieties
- best used with nonwashable/stable woven fabrics
- removing the paper backing in the stitchijg area

water soluble stabilizer

- dissovles easily in water without leaving a residue on the finished piece
- available in a variety of weights

heat soluble stabilizer

- heat sensitive woven fabric that disintegrates with a dry, hot iron, thrn brushes away easily

liquid stabilizer

- a wash away stabilizer is sorayed on washable fabric to stiffen it
- must dry before stitching

other stabilizers

- any lightweight fabric such as organza, organdy, or interfacing can be used to stabilize fabric before stitching

tissue paper

- freezer paper can be used to stabilize fabric during stitching

sharps

- all purpose sewing

ball point needles

- all purpose sewing
- special rounded tip that enables the needle to slide between threads rather than piercing them

betweens

- short needles with small rounded eyes

needle threader

- small disk with a loop of wire attatched
- inserted through the eye of the needle

thimble

- protect the middle finger guiding a needle

beeswax

- coating for sewing thread

- stores pins
- attached to a pin cushion

seam ripper

- a small tool used for ripping out stitching

bodkin

- an instrument with a large eye or special teeth clamp at one end

loop turner

- a long, slim wire with a latch hook at one end

awl

- sharp, pointed tool used for making eyelets and round holes

point turner

- used to push out points, such as collars and cuffs

glue stick

- solid glue used for pinkess basting

basting tape

- double-faced taoe used for basting fabric pieces together

fusible web

- nonwoven material that bonds two layers of fabric together when steam and heat are applied

fusible thread

- polyester thread twisted with a fusible fiber
- touched with a steam iron

dissolvable basting thread

- hand/machine baste garment areas together until they are permanently stitched

liquid seam sealant

- liquis glue that prevents fraying or raveling

paper backed fusible transfer paper

- bonds fabric to fabric
