Medroxyprogesterone (Provera), megestrol (Megace)

Progestins (Synthetic derivatives of progesterone)

Treatment of uterine bleeding, treatment of primary and secondary amenorrhea, Palliative treatment of some cancers and endometriosis, prevention of threatened miscarriage, alleviation of symptoms of PMS, Alone or with estrogens in the prevention of concep

Progestins: Indications

Megestrol (Megace)

Adjunct therapy for treatment of breast and endometrial cancers
-used for management of anorexia, cachexia, or unexplained weight loss in AIDS patients
-Used to stimulate appetite and promote weight gain in patients with cancer

Medroxyprogesterone (Provera, Depo-Provera)

Used to treat uterine bleeding, secondary amenorrhea, endometrial cancer, and is also used as a contraceptive (Long-acting injectable form)

Liver dysfunction, thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, such as PE, Nausea, vomiting, Amenorrhea, breakthrough uterine bleeding, spotting, edema, weight gain or loss

Transdermal contraceptive patch

Prevent ovulation by inhibiting the release of gonadotropins and increasing uterine mucous viscosity, resulting in:
-Decreased sperm movement and fertilization of the ovum
-Possible inhibition of implantation of a fertilized egg (zygote)
-Improve menstrua

Contraceptive Drugs: MOA

Alendronate (Fosamax), ibandronate (Boniva), Reclast

-Work by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, thus preventing bone loss
-both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis

Headache, GI upset, joint pain
Risk of esophageal burns if medication lodges in esophagus before reaching the stomach
Risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw
Take at least 30min before the first morning beverage, food, or other medication with at least 6 to 8 oz

Adverse effects of bisphosphonates

Raloxifene (Evista), Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)

Selective estrogen receptor modifier (SERM)
-Stimulate estrogen receptor on bone and increase bone density
-prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis
