Why did Buck despise Spitz?

Because Spitz had killed good natured Curly who had only made friendly overatures toward him, and afterwards he'd "ran out his tongue and laughed." This is why Buck hated Spitz.

What were Perrault and Francois carrying on the sleds?

The had important despatches (mail or documents) they carried for the Canadian Government as they were couriers.

Which dogs were the ones that liked the toil of trace and trail, but were sullen?

Dave and Sol-leks.

How did Buck figure out where the dogs slept at night?

He was looking around for them when he stepped on Billee curled up under the snow in a snug ball.

What happens at Lake Le Barge?

Perrault, Francois, and dogs had stopped to camp for the night as a storm was picking up. They are attacked by starving dogs from the neighboring Indian village because the dogs could smell the food they were carrying.

How does Buck become the lead dog?

He fights Spitz to the death and when they go to hook Sol-leks up in Spitz's place in the lead Buck attacks Sol-leks and Sol-leks doesn't want to be hooked into the lead. Buck keeps running away from being hooked into his old spot so finally Perrault hook

The dog team is sold from Perrault and Francois to the Scottish half-breed. When Dave can no longer pull they put Sol-leks in Dave's position. What does Dave do?

He bites through Sol-leks traces, the dogs pull away without the sled, and Dave stands in his proper place. So they hook Dave back into the trace.

What happens when Dave can no longer get up at all?

They take off with the dog sled team, but when it gets behind the grove of trees the Scottish half-breed walks back to where Dave was and they hear a shot. All the dogs know that Dave is dead.

How do we know that Hal and Charles will not be good dog-sled mushers?

The sled is overloaded, loaded in a slipshod manner, they overly harsh with the dogs, they have too many dogs, not enough dog food, and people keep giving them common sense advice, but they don't listen.

What happens when Hal whips the dogs to pull the oversized load and the dogs finally get it going?

Because it's top heavy it capsizes (flips over) when the dogs take the first turn on to main street and their belongs are scattered.

How does John Thornton become Buck's new master?

When Hal is beating him with a club and refuses to get up and is almost dead, John Thornton steps between Buck and Hal and tells Hal that he'll kill him if he touches that dog again. Then John cuts Buck out of the traces.

When Hal, Charles, and Mercedes take off against Thornton's advice because the ice was ready to fall out what happens?

They take off with only 4 dogs pulling the overloaded sled with Mercedes on top. But a few minutes on to the ice and the sled breaks through the ice as it breaks away and they're all drown.

How does Buck win John Thornton a $1600 wager?

He is able to breakout a sled that's runners are froze down and pull the 1,000 pound sled 100 yards.

How does Buck accomplish such a feat?

He senses how important it is to John Thornton and he loves John with all his heart.

What is Buck off doing for four days while Hans, Pete, and John are busy panning for gold at camp?

His primordial nature and blood-longing intensify and he looks for prey that's more challenging. He cuts a wounded bull moose from the herd, kills it, and lavishes in satiating himself with it.

What is the only thing holding Buck back from answering the call of the wild?

His love for John Thornton.

Buck begins running with the wolf pack after what happens?

He goes back to camp and find that John Thornton's been killed by the Yeehats.
