Measuring Matter 8th Grade Science

WEIGHT

a measure of the force of gravity on an object.

MASS

a measure of how much matter is in an object.

VOLUME

the amount of space that matter occupies

DENSITY

the measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume.

INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS (SI)

the system of units used by scientists to measure the properties of matter.

MATTER

the "stuff" that makes up everything in the universe.

WHAT PROPERTIES OF MATTER DO WE MEASURE?

1. length
2. mass
3. volume
4. density

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MASS and WEIGHT?

If you move an object away from Earth, its weight changes (because of gravity) but its mass stays the same.

HOW DO WE MEASURE MASS?
WHAT SCIENTIFIC TOOL DO WE USE?

We place an object on a triple beam balance and record the number in grams.

WHAT ARE THE METRIC UNITS FOR MASS?

Grams and kilograms.

HOW DO WE MEASURE LIQUID VOLUME?

We use a graduated cylinder.

HOW DO WE MEASURE THE VOLUME OF A REGULAR OBJECT?

We use a ruler to measure length, width and height. Then, we multiply length x width x height to calculate volume.

WHAT IS THE FORMULA FOR CALCULATING VOLUME?

Length X Width X Height
LxWxH

HOW DO WE MEASURE THE VOLUME OF AN IRREGULAR OBJECT?

We use a graduated cylinder.
1. Measure the amount of volumen in the cylinder.
2. Add the object to the cylinder.
3. Measure the new volume.
4. Calculate the difference. The difference is the object's volume.

WHAT SCIENTIFIC TOOLS DO WE USE TO MEASURE VOLUME?

We use a ruler and/or a graduated cylinder.

WHAT ARE SOME METRIC UNITS FOR VOLUME?

milliliter
cubic centimeter
liter
cubic meter

WHAT IS VOLUME?

Volume is the amount of space enclosed by a shape or object, how much 3-dimensional space (length, width, and height) it occupies.

WHAT IS MASS?

how much matter an object has

WHAT IS DENSITY?

the mass per unit volume

HOW DO WE MEASURE DENSITY? WHAT SCIENTIFIC TOOLS DO WE USE?

we measure density by using the formula mass/volume=density. We use a triple beam balance and a graduated cylinder to find the density.

HOW IS DENSITY CALCULATED?

mass/volume=density

WHAT ARE SOME METRIC UNITS FOR DENSITY?

g/cm3

METRIC UNITS FOR MASS?

grams, kilograms, decigrams..etc

METRIC UNITS FOR VOLUME?

milliliter,centiliter,deciliter..etc

METRIC UNITS FOR DENSITY?

grams, centimeters cubed
