Affect

outward representation of a person's internal state of being
objective finding based on the nurse's assessment

Anergia

abnormal lack of energy
may result in psychomotor retardation

Anhedonia

absence of happiness or pleasure in aspects of life that once made them happy

Bereavement Exclusion

when clinicians would not diagnose a person with depression in the first 2 months following a significant loss

Deep Brain Stimulation

treatment whereby electrodes are surgically implanted into specific areas of the brain to stimulate those regions identified to be underactive in depression

Electroconvulsive Therapy

highly effective somatic treatment
brief seizures (30-60 seconds) are deliberately induced by an electrical current transmitted through electrodes attached to head while person is under general anesthesia

Light Therapy

first line treatment for seasonal affective disorder
30-45 minutes of exposure daily to a 10,000 lux light source

Major Depressive Disorder

a persistently depressed mood lasting for a minimum of 2 weeks

Persistent Depressive Disorder

dysthymia
feelings of depression occur most of the day for the majority of days
last at least 2 yrs in children and adolescents and 1 year in adults

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

a cluster of symptoms that occur in the last week before the onset of a woman's period

Serotonin Syndrome

rare effect of SSRI
sx include abdominal pain, diarrhea, sweating, fever, tachycardia, elevated BP, altered mental state (delirium), myoclonus, increased motor activity, irritability, hostility, and mood change
life threatening

Suicidal Ideation

could be relatively mild or persistent and involving a plan
patient fantasizes about their funeral or death and wanting to die

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

noninvasive treatment modality
uses MRI strength magnetic pulses to stimulate focal areas of cerebral cortex

Vagus Nerve Stimulation

stimulation results in boosting level of neurotransmitters which improves mood and enhances action of antidepressants

alterations of activities that support physical life and growth
